The Housing Authority is set to initiate the development of 200 prefabricated housing units alongside 362 residential lots to tackle the pressing housing need and improve homeownership prospects across the nation. Housing Minister Maciu Nalumisa announced that construction is expected to begin this year.
This initiative is part of a comprehensive strategy featuring five public-private partnership projects, aimed at increasing first-time homeownership rates and addressing informal settlements over the next decade. The designated areas for these new developments include Nepani, Davuilevu, Wainibuku, Tavakubu, Lautoka, and Tavua. However, the financial viability of these projects has been a concern, leading to a cabinet decision earlier this year to revert their management to the Housing Authority.
To attract developers, the Housing Authority has announced a call for expressions of interest. Developers are invited to submit designs for three housing models: prefabricated units, duplexes, and strata units, with a submission deadline of February 5, 2025.
Additionally, Nalumisa mentioned that the Ministry is working with various agencies to establish a rent-to-own policy, which aims to facilitate a more seamless transition to homeownership for newcomers to the housing market.
Amidst the ongoing challenges in meeting housing demands, these initiatives represent a hopeful advancement towards affordable housing solutions for Fijians, enhancing living conditions and accessibility to homes. The Housing Authority’s commitment to diversifying housing options and collaborating with private developers is a proactive strategy addressing the housing crisis while fostering homeownership nationwide.
