New Horizons: Joel Abraham’s Next Chapter in Consumer Protection

Joel Abraham, the former CEO of the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC), has taken on the role of Executive Director at the Asia Pacific Regulatory Centre. In a recent social media post, Mr. Abraham expressed his gratitude to the Fijian government for the trust placed in him during his leadership at the FCCC, a position he held since 2016 after joining the organization in 2013.

Mr. Abraham emphasized the importance of Fijian consumers in his role, stating, “Most importantly, I want to thank the Fijian consumers—you are at the heart of everything we do. Your trust and engagement have been the driving force behind our efforts.” His commitment to values such as transparency, fairness, and economic empowerment will continue in his new position, where he aims to contribute meaningfully to the region.

During his time at the FCCC, Mr. Abraham was recognized as a transformative leader, responsible for significant advancements in consumer protection and regulatory practices. The FCCC noted his accomplishments in creating a robust framework to defend consumer rights and establish fair business practices in Fiji.

One of his major achievements was founding the Pacific Islands Network of Competition, Consumer Protection, and Economic Regulators (PINCCER), which strengthened collaborative efforts among Pacific nations and elevated regional regulatory standards. His tenure also included various initiatives that benefitted employees, such as the iCARE program, sustainability packages, and flexible work arrangements, illustrating his commitment to both consumer and employee welfare.

Having led the FCCC to gain national and international recognition, including awards like the Fiji Business Excellence Awards, Mr. Abraham’s legacy is expected to continue influencing the regulatory landscape positively as he embarks on this next chapter.
