President Donald Trump’s senior adviser for Africa, Massad Boulos, announced that he has engaged in discussions with the presidents of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo regarding a draft peace agreement aimed at resolving a long-standing conflict in the region. The U.S. is currently awaiting final feedback from both countries on the proposed plan, which is expected over the weekend.
Boulos expressed optimism about the talks, noting that both Rwandan President Paul Kagame and Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi were pleased with the progress made so far. “It was very positive from both of them,” he stated, highlighting their eagerness to collaborate with the U.S., Qatar, and the African Union to reach a comprehensive solution that fosters lasting peace.
The conflict in northeastern Congo has been aggravated by the activities of the M23 rebel group, which has reportedly enforced control over significant regions, leading to substantial civilian casualties and displacements.
