The relocation of 37 families from Nadoiviri in Dreketi, Macuata, has made substantial progress as reports confirm the safety of the area for housing developments, despite its low-lying geographic nature. Ratu Maika Rokobatidua, the Vunivalu of Dreketi, has provided reassurance to the community with information from the Ministry of Lands that the site is suitable for home construction. This announcement comes in response to earlier concerns about a recent mudslide caused by heavy rainfall and elevated creek levels, which have since been alleviated by the installation of new drainage systems aimed at effectively directing water away from the construction area.

Ratu Maika emphasized that plans for the relocation were initiated before the geohazard event of 2021, primarily to address the village’s increasing population. He stressed that Nadoiviri should not be perceived as an entirely new village but rather as an extension of Nabavatu, affirming that it falls within the existing village boundaries.

Minister for Rural Development, Sakiasi Ditoka, also confirmed the thorough due diligence performed in selecting contractors for the project, prioritizing quality and reliability in building the new homes. The construction design incorporates resilience measures capable of withstanding Category 5 cyclones, showcasing a proactive approach to ensuring community safety in the face of Dreketi’s challenging weather conditions.

This relocation initiative represents a critical response to the difficulties faced by families displaced by Tropical Cyclone Ana in January 2021, providing the hope of improved living conditions. It highlights the unwavering resilience of the Nabavatu community and their collective aspirations for a better living environment.

The government’s significant investment of $5.9 million from the Relocation of Communities Trust Fund further emphasizes a strong commitment to disaster resilience and rebuilding efforts in Fiji. With the construction progressing, families are on the brink of moving into their new homes, signaling a promising new chapter in their journey towards recovery and stability.

This project not only reflects the community’s strength and perseverance but also serves as a testament to the proactive measures being taken to safeguard the future against environmental challenges.
