More than 8,000 residents from the districts of Dawasamu, Namena, and Sawakasa in northern Tailevu are set to benefit from the recently inaugurated Dogo Health Centre. This facility will also manage the services provided at nursing stations located at Ratu Kadavulevu School, Dawasamu, and Queen Victoria School.
During the commissioning of the health centre, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka emphasized that enhancing access to quality healthcare is a vital goal for the Coalition Government. “The opening of this health centre marks a significant milestone for both the Government and the people of Tailevu North, especially in Sawakasa, Dawasamu, and Namena,” he remarked.
The Prime Minister expressed gratitude to the Minister for Health, the Permanent Secretary, and the New Zealand Government for their ongoing support to Fiji’s health sector. The health centre, rebuilt after a fire in 2017, received funding of $472,895 from the Government of New Zealand.
In addition to celebrating the health centre’s opening, Prime Minister Rabuka addressed the pressing issue of Non-Communicable Diseases. He encouraged those present to take advantage of the remaining health services, such as blood sugar and blood pressure tests, stressing the importance of awareness in maintaining personal health.
“Our health is our wealth, and we must all take responsibility to look after ourselves—for our families, our community, and our nation,” he stated, underscoring that promoting family and community health is essential for a robust Fiji.
New Zealand’s High Commissioner to Fiji, Her Excellency Ms. Charlotte Darlow, reaffirmed her country’s commitment to supporting Fiji’s health sector, as well as initiatives focused on climate resilience, adaptation, and economic empowerment.
This development brings hope for improved health services in the region, fostering a healthier community that can contribute positively to the nation’s future. The collaboration between Fiji and New Zealand highlights an important partnership for advancing healthcare infrastructure, essential for overcoming public health challenges.
