Over 8,000 residents from the districts of Dawasamu, Namena, and Sawakasa in Northern Tailevu are set to benefit from the newly inaugurated Dogo Health Centre. This facility will also manage health services at nearby nursing stations located at Ratu Kadavulevu School in Dawasamu and Queen Victoria School.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing access to quality healthcare during the opening ceremony, describing this event as a significant milestone for the local community. “Today’s celebration for the opening of this health centre is therefore a milestone for the Government and people of Tailevu North, particularly for Sawakasa, Dawasamu, and Namena,” he commented. He expressed gratitude to the Minister for Health, the Permanent Secretary, and the Government of New Zealand for their continued support in improving Fiji’s health sector.
The Dogo Health Centre was refurbished following a fire in 2017 and was funded by the New Zealand Government at a cost of $472,895. During the ceremony, Prime Minister Rabuka also addressed the pressing issue of Non-Communicable Diseases, urging attendees to make use of healthcare services such as blood sugar and blood pressure testing. He encouraged everyone to understand their health status and adhere to medical advice.
“Our health is our wealth, and we must all take responsibility to look after ourselves—for our families, our community, and our nation,” Rabuka stated. He underlined that ensuring the wellness of families and communities is crucial for building a robust Fiji.
New Zealand’s High Commissioner to Fiji, Her Excellency Ms. Charlotte Darlow, reaffirmed her country’s dedication to supporting Fiji in health initiatives as well as in areas such as climate resilience and economic empowerment.
This newly opened health centre marks a significant step towards improving healthcare accessibility for the local communities and showcases the strengthening ties between Fiji and New Zealand in the health sector. With government initiatives focused on health and community well-being, there is a hopeful outlook for better health outcomes in the future.
