The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) is set to announce new head coaches for the Fijiana 7s and 15s teams within this week, as confirmed by FRU chief executive officer, Rovereto Nayacalevu. Offers have been extended to several potential candidates, and the organization is currently awaiting their responses.
Among the notable applicants is Waisale Serevi, a celebrated figure in rugby sevens, who has shown interest in the Fijiana 7s head coaching position. His coaching experience includes a recent tenure with the Indian Women’s 7s team. Sireli Bobo, a former player with experience in both the 7s and 15s formats, is also mentioned as a candidate. Nayacalevu has opted not to disclose the full list of applicants at this time.
Serevi is expected to work with Bobo and the Fiji Sports Council coaching team to prepare the Under-20 7s squad for upcoming challenges. His recent appointment as the International Brand Ambassador for Aqua Pacific Natural Artesian Water further underlines his continued involvement and influence in the rugby community.
The Fijiana 15s head coach position became available following the departure of Mosese Rauluni last October, a coach recognized for leading the team to victory in the Oceania Championship and securing qualification for the next Rugby World Cup. The incoming coach will face significant challenges in taking over from a leader who made a substantial impact, including steering the team to their first victory against Japan.
On the other hand, the head coaching role for the Fijiana 7s team has been vacant since Saiasi Fuli’s contract ended in December after five successful years, during which he led the team to a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Nayacalevu emphasized the FRU’s commitment to selecting the best candidates who can enhance performance and drive improvements in the teams’ results, signifying a forward-thinking approach to women’s rugby in Fiji. The forthcoming announcements are generating positive anticipation within the rugby community, reflecting a hopeful outlook for the development of rugby in the country.
Overall, these changes represent not just a shift in coaching personnel but an opportunity for renewed growth and increased competitiveness on the international stage for Fijian women’s rugby.
