To promote the cultivation of sugarcane among newcomers, the Sugar Ministry has launched the New Farmers Scheme and Land Lease Renewal Programme. Acting Permanent Secretary Reshmi Kumari announced that the initiative has a budget of $1 million, specifically designed to support individuals who are venturing into sugarcane farming for the first time.
This grant will also benefit farmers whose land leases are up for renewal between August 1, 2024, and July 31, 2025. Under the scheme, the ministry will cover 30 percent of the land purchase cost or a maximum of $7,500, whichever amount is less. Applications are currently open, having started on November 1, and will remain accessible until April 30 of the following year.
The funding will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, encouraging timely applications. A key requirement is that any land acquired must consist of a minimum of 10 acres deemed suitable for sugarcane cultivation.
This initiative not only aims to invigorate the sugarcane farming sector but also presents a valuable opportunity for new farmers to establish themselves in an important agricultural field. It highlights the government’s commitment to fostering economic growth and sustainability within the agricultural community.
