A new fire station is set to be established in the Natadola area, addressing the urgent need for enhanced emergency response times in light of a significant rise in fire incidents and road accidents along the busy Sigatoka-Nadi corridor. Over the past six years, this region has experienced more than 205 structural fires that resulted in damages estimated at approximately $500,000, as highlighted by Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa during the groundbreaking ceremony.

The National Fire Authority (NFA) also reported its involvement in 125 road accident rescues and 1,135 ambulance evacuations along this corridor, reinforcing the critical demand for improved emergency services. During the ceremony, Nalumisa emphasized the importance of the new facility, indicating that it reflects the increasing tourist investments in the area, which necessitate better firefighting and rescue operations supported by the nearby Sigatoka and Nadi fire stations.

NFA Chief Executive Puamau Sowane remarked that the establishment of this fire station is anticipated to dramatically reduce emergency response times, potentially saving lives in an area notorious for traffic accidents. This development is expected to benefit the local community significantly, as well as the nearby five hotels and resorts, eight schools (including five primary institutions), two early childhood education centers, and one secondary school.

The total projected cost for the project exceeds $2.8 million, with $1 million earmarked for Phase 1 from the national budget for 2024-2025. The initial phase will focus on civil works and fencing, with a lead consultant appointed to oversee the project’s completion.

In addition to this project, ongoing enhancements in the region, such as the recent $400,000 upgrade to the Levuka Fire Station, aim to strengthen fire safety and emergency response capabilities, which is crucial for protecting the area’s rich heritage structures.

The development of the Natadola fire station represents a proactive step toward improved public safety and emergency preparedness. With continued investments and collaborative efforts, there is optimism for further advancements in emergency services across Fiji, ultimately leading to safer communities for everyone.
