A new Commissioner for the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) is set to take office this afternoon. This information was confirmed by Francis Puleiwai, the Acting Deputy Commissioner of FICAC.
Puleiwai indicated that she has received notice of the transition, but details regarding the identity of the new Commissioner and their responsibilities have not been officially revealed. According to section 5(1) of the FICAC Act 2007, the President appoints the Commissioner based on a recommendation from the Judicial Services Commission, which must also consult with the Attorney-General.
Additionally, FICAC announced that a raid was conducted at the Election Commission yesterday, during which documents pertinent to the investigation of Chairperson Barbara Malimali were seized. Malimali is currently facing allegations of abuse of office.
