New FICAC Commissioner Set for Surprise Appointment Amidst Ongoing Investigations

A new Commissioner for the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) will officially take office this afternoon. This information was confirmed by Acting Deputy Commissioner Francis Puleiwai. Puleiwai mentioned that she has been informed about the transition, but details about the new Commissioner’s identity and responsibilities have not yet been publicly shared.

According to section 5(1) of the FICAC Act 2007, the Commissioner is appointed by the President upon the recommendation of the Judicial Services Commission, which must consult with the Attorney-General prior to making its decision.

In related news, FICAC has carried out a raid at the Election Commission, seizing documents connected to an investigation involving Chairperson Barbara Malimali. Malimali is currently facing allegations of abuse of office.
