New FICAC Commissioner Faces Controversy from Day One

Barbara Malimali has been named the new Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). The commission confirmed that her appointment was made through the Judicial Services Commission and approved by the President.

According to section 5(1) of the FICAC Act 2007, the Commissioner is appointed by the President based on the recommendation of the Judicial Services Commission, which consults with the Attorney-General during the process.

In a related development, FICAC announced that they conducted a raid on the Election Commission, where they seized documents linked to an investigation involving Chairperson Barbara Malimali. She is currently facing allegations of abuse of office.
