New FICAC Chief Faces Controversy Amid Allegations

Barbara Malimali has been named the new Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). FICAC has announced that her appointment was made through the Judicial Services Commission and authorized by the President. According to section 5(1) of the FICAC Act 2007, the President appoints the Commissioner based on the recommendation of the Judicial Services Commission, which consults with the Attorney-General beforehand.

Additionally, FICAC has revealed that a raid was conducted at the Election Commission yesterday, during which documents linked to the investigation of Chairperson Barbara Malimali were confiscated. Malimali is currently facing allegations of abuse of office.
