Finance Minister Prof. Biman Prasad has reported that municipal councils did not introduce any new fees or charges in 2023. However, the Cabinet has approved new garbage fees for Tavua Town Council and revised fees for the Nakasi Market, under the purview of the Nausori Town Council, to take effect in 2024.
Prof. Prasad indicated that two government agencies have also reviewed their fees and service charges, citing increases in gravel royalty rates by the iTaukei Land Trust Board and adjustments to slaughter fees set by the Fiji Meats Industry Board. The last update for these fees occurred in 2014 and 2005, respectively.
In addition, three town councils—Rakiraki, Tavua, and Levuka—have revised their fees and charges in 2024 to adapt to the evolving economic landscape and service demands. These fee adjustments and reviews reflect ongoing efforts by local authorities to modernize services and ensure that municipal operations remain sustainable.
Similar actions were previously reported regarding the Nausori Town Council’s implementation of fees for market stall rentals, alongside fee adjustments for various services in Levuka, Rakiraki, and Tavua. The overarching goal of these changes is to enhance local commerce, support market operators, and improve public services, ultimately promoting economic growth within these communities.
This proactive approach by the government may serve as a catalyst for improved infrastructure and service delivery, fostering a more vibrant economic environment in the regions affected. Residents can look forward to better-managed services as local councils adapt to current needs while ensuring their long-term financial health.
