Interim head coach Timoci Volavola has assembled a fresh roster for the Fijiana 7s team this season, featuring just three experienced players, including Ana Maria Naimasi. This move comes on the heels of a disappointing performance at the Paris Olympic Games, where the team finished in 12th place without a victory. Volavola is optimistic that the new lineup can rejuvenate interest and support for women’s sevens rugby.
After a significant turnover of personnel from the previous season, Volavola plans to announce his final 12-member squad following medical clearances on Thursday. He has noted marked improvements in the new players since they began training, which has left him feeling encouraged.
“It’s a tough start considering last year’s results, but I am ready to take on this challenge,” Volavola stated. “My goal is to rebuild support for the women’s team. These new players have demonstrated their commitment and are eager to prove themselves.”
Acknowledging the setbacks of the past, he is determined to cultivate a positive team culture, emphasizing discipline and a strong mentality both on and off the field. Volavola has indicated that any players who fail to adhere to team rules will not fit into his vision for the squad.
“My priority is to maintain a place in the top eight for our core team. This upcoming tournament will be a first for many of these girls, and I am committed to guiding them to succeed,” he added.
Fijiana will compete in Pool A against formidable opponents Australia, Ireland, and China. Volavola stressed the importance of adequate recovery after a long journey as they aim to perform well against these seasoned teams, all of whom had strong showings during the Olympics.
“We’re ready to work hard and pursue our objectives,” Volavola concluded. He is joined in coaching duties by former sevens representative Emosi Mulevoro, who will assist in guiding this new generation of players.
This new chapter for the Fijiana 7s team symbolizes hope and resilience as they aim to turn around their fortunes in women’s rugby. The combination of fresh talent and renewed focus under Volavola’s leadership could very well pave the way for a successful season ahead.
