New Zealand Sevens Head Coach Tomasi Cama has announced the addition of three new players to his squad as the team gears up for the 2024-25 HSBC Sevens World Series. The newcomers include Oli Mathis from Waikato and Sofai Maka from North Harbour, along with Joey Taumateine, who has been promoted from the New Zealand Men’s Sevens Development team.

Coach Cama expressed his enthusiasm for integrating young talent into the team, highlighting the opportunity for growth and development. “As coaches, it excites us to bring young people in and help with their growth,” he remarked. “They have to learn fast, but that is all part of the excitement.”

Dylan Collier will take on the role of captain, supported by seasoned players Joe Webber and Sione Molia, both of whom bring extensive experience with over 50 games each in the iconic black jersey.

Cama emphasized the team’s commitment to their core values, stating, “We’ve talked a lot about connecting to our DNA. This team is about hard work, and that will be the foundation for us to play a brand of rugby we all love: exciting, free-playing, and unstructured. That’s what we want to go out there to do.”

This fresh infusion of talent combined with seasoned leadership presents an optimistic outlook for the upcoming season, paving the way for a dynamic and exciting style of rugby that fans have come to cherish. The blend of youthful energy and experience could be a key factor in New Zealand’s pursuit of success in the competitive world of Sevens rugby.
