New Zealand’s Head Coach for the Sevens team, Tomasi Cama, has welcomed three fresh talents to the squad as preparations commence for the 2024-25 HSBC SVNS Series. The newcomers include Oli Mathis from Waikato and Sofai Maka from North Harbour, alongside Joey Taumateine, who has transitioned from the New Zealand Men’s Sevens Development team.
Coach Cama expressed his enthusiasm about integrating young players into the team. “As coaches, we are excited to bring in young talent and support their development,” he stated. “They will need to adapt quickly, but that’s part of the thrill.”
Dylan Collier has been appointed as the captain, supported by experienced players Joe Webber and Sione Molia, each with over 50 appearances in the national jersey. The team aims to stay connected to their “DNA,” focusing on hard work as the foundation for their play style, which they describe as exhilarating, free-flowing, and unstructured.
The integration of these emerging players signals a promising future for the squad, combining youthful energy with experienced leadership—a mix that could yield exciting results on the field.
This approach not only emphasizes talent development but also showcases the team’s commitment to maintaining their core rugby identity, fostering a culture that values hard work and creativity. As they embark on this new season, fans can anticipate a vibrant and dynamic style of play from the New Zealand Sevens team.
