New Zealand’s 7s Head Coach, Tomasi Cama, has announced the inclusion of three new players as the team gears up for the upcoming 2024-25 HSBC SVNS Series. The fresh talent consists of Oli Mathis from Waikato and Sofai Maka from North Harbour, along with Joey Taumateine, who is making the jump from the New Zealand Men’s Sevens Development team.
Cama expressed enthusiasm about integrating young players into the squad, emphasizing the excitement of their rapid learning curve. “As coaches, it excites us to bring young people in and help with their growth,” Cama commented, underlining the importance of fostering their development.
The team will be captained by Dylan Collier, who is joined by seasoned players Joe Webber and Sione Molia, both of whom have each played over 50 matches for New Zealand. The coaching staff has emphasized the need to connect with the team’s core values. Cama remarked, “This team is about hard work, that will be the foundation that allows us to play a brand of rugby we all love; exciting, free playing, unstructured. That’s what we want to go out there to do.”
This fresh infusion of talent and commitment to a dynamic style of play bodes well for the team, as they look to create a memorable and impactful season ahead.
The positive takeaway here is the investment in young talent, ensuring the future of New Zealand rugby at the 7s level looks promising. The balance between experience and youth could lead to innovative strategies, making their gameplay even more exhilarating.
