The Fiji Australia Business Council (FABC) and the Market Development Facility (MDF) have established a strategic partnership aimed at enhancing the export capabilities of Fiji’s agri-food manufacturing small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The partnership was formalized through a signed Memorandum of Understanding by FABC president Himen Chandra and MDF team leader Oliver Mathieson in Suva yesterday.

This collaboration will introduce an Agri-Food Manufacturing SME Export Accelerator Program designed to assist promising Fijian businesses in navigating barriers to market entry, particularly into the Australian market. Kelera Cavuilati, MDF’s Fiji country director, emphasized that the accelerator will offer practical and in-depth support to agri-food manufacturers, equipping them with valuable market insights through FABC’s robust business networks with Australia.

Cavuilati highlighted the long-term benefits of the program, stating, “Successful exports mean stronger businesses, new jobs, and more resilient value chains in Fiji’s manufacturing sector.” This initiative aims to fortify Fiji’s export sector, addressing the significant potential of local agri-food manufacturers while also tackling challenges such as compliance, packaging, logistics, and market access.

Chandra remarked on the initiative’s alignment with their strategic goals of boosting SME capabilities, promoting trade, and enhancing commercial relationships between Fiji and Australia. He noted that the program provides actionable solutions with measurable outcomes for local businesses.

The accelerator will feature a variety of learning formats, including self-paced online content, interactive webinars, and hands-on in-person workshops. Notably, there are approximately ten scholarships available for SMEs, with FABC slated to sponsor six to eight successful candidates. The application process for this inaugural accelerator cohort is set to open in the coming weeks.

Through this partnership, there is newfound optimism for the future of Fiji’s agri-food sector, as it paves the way for strengthened export avenues and enhanced economic resilience for local SMEs.
