New Evacuation Centre in Nadi Boosts Community Resilience

The Yavusania Retrofitted Evacuation Centre in Nadi was officially inaugurated earlier this week. This project received funding from the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and was carried out by IOM Fiji in collaboration with the Fiji National Disaster Management Office and Save the Children.

During the launch, Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management Sakiasi Ditoka expressed gratitude to KOICA, IOM, and Save the Children Fiji for their teamwork with the Ministry and the Fiji NDMO to achieve this significant milestone. He stated that the government is dedicated to improving resilience against the challenges posed by climate change.

KOICA’s country director, Hankyulsam Cho, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to ensuring that communities in Fiji are resilient, empowered, and prepared for future challenges. “With enhanced capacities, strong partnerships, and the steadfast resilience of the Fijian people, I am confident that we will continue to create a safer and more secure future for everyone,” Cho emphasized. She also thanked the Government of Fiji, IOM, and all partners involved in making this project a reality.

The new facility, which was funded at a cost of $203,250, will offer crucial protection for vulnerable populations during emergencies and function as a central gathering point for the community, thereby bolstering resilience and promoting long-term safety.
