New Evacuation Centre in Nadi: A Step Towards Resilience

The Yavusania Retrofitted Evacuation Centre in Nadi was officially inaugurated earlier this week. The project, which cost $203,250, was financed by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and executed by IOM Fiji in collaboration with the Fiji National Disaster Management Office and Save the Children.

During the project’s commissioning, the Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Sakiasi Ditoka, praised KOICA, IOM, and Save the Children Fiji for their partnership with the Ministry and the Fiji NDMO in achieving this important milestone. Minister Ditoka reaffirmed the Government’s dedication to improving resilience against climate change threats.

KOICA country director Hankyulsam Cho expressed the organization’s commitment to empowering Fijian communities to face future challenges. She stated, “With strengthened capacities, a solid partnership, and the unwavering resilience of the Fijian people, I am confident that we will continue to build a safer and more secure future for all.” Cho also extended her gratitude to the Government of Fiji, IOM, and all partners involved in the successful completion of the project.

The new facility aims to offer vital protection for vulnerable groups during emergencies and will act as a central gathering place for the community, enhancing overall resilience and promoting long-term safety.
