New Evacuation Centre in Nadi: A Step Towards Resilience

The Yavusania Retrofitted Evacuation Centre in Nadi was officially inaugurated earlier this week. This project received funding from the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and was carried out by IOM Fiji in collaboration with the Fiji National Disaster Management Office and Save the Children.

During the commissioning, the Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Sakiasi Ditoka, expressed gratitude to KOICA, IOM, and Save the Children Fiji for their collaboration with the Ministry and the Fiji NDMO to achieve this significant milestone. He emphasized the Government’s commitment to improving resilience against climate change threats.

KOICA’s country director, Hankyulsam Cho, reiterated the organization’s dedication to ensuring that communities in Fiji are resilient, empowered, and prepared for future challenges. Cho expressed confidence in building a safer and more secure future through strengthened capacities and solid partnerships. She also acknowledged the efforts of the Government of Fiji, IOM, and all stakeholders involved in completing the project.

The new facility, which was funded at $203,250, aims to provide crucial protection for vulnerable groups during emergencies. Additionally, it will function as a central gathering place for the community, fostering resilience and enhancing long-term safety.
