Retired Judge Justice Filimone Jitoko has been elected as the new Speaker of Fiji’s Parliament. His election took place this morning, where he garnered a total of 34 votes. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka proposed Justice Jitoko’s candidacy, which received support from Opposition Member Viliame Naupoto.
In contrast, Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu put forward the nomination of former Deputy Speaker Ruveni Nadalo, which was seconded by stand-alone Opposition MP Alvick Maharaj. Nadalo secured only 15 votes in the election.
Justice Jitoko takes over the position from Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, who recently assumed the role of President of the Republic of Fiji Islands on October 31.
This change in leadership within the Parliament marks an important transition for Fiji, bringing in a figure with judicial experience to help guide legislative processes. Justice Jitoko’s election may instill a renewed sense of stability and direction in Fijian governance. With bipartisan support for his appointment, there is hope that he will foster collaboration between differing political factions moving forward.
