Dr. Brett Robinson of Australia has been appointed as the new chairman of World Rugby after a decisive election during the 2024 interim World Rugby Council meeting held in Dublin, Ireland. At 54 years old, Robinson stands out as the first chairman elected from the Southern Hemisphere. He triumphed over contenders Abdelatiff Benazzi from France and Andrea Rinaldo from Italy in the election.

This important selection was conducted through a secret ballot, closely monitored by independent scrutineers to ensure adherence to World Rugby’s Constitution. Robinson’s tenure will last for four years, with the option to run for re-election in 2028.

Expressing his gratitude, Robinson remarked, “It is an immense privilege and honour to have been elected as World Rugby chairman by my colleagues on Council.” He emphasized his strong commitment to collaborating with member unions and the World Rugby executive team. His goals include fostering financial stability amidst rising costs, executing World Rugby’s growth strategy, enhancing audience engagement, investing in player safety and innovation, and ensuring effective governance.

Robinson also extended his congratulations to the other elected officials and acknowledged the courage of those who participated in the election. He looks forward to working with the newly formed World Rugby Executive Committee and continuing the legacy established by outgoing chairman Sir Bill Beaumont.

Beaumont, who spent eight years in office, will be remembered for implementing significant governance reforms, expanding the Rugby World Cup, and steering the organization through the challenges posed by the global pandemic.

This transition symbolizes a new chapter for World Rugby, bringing fresh leadership and a renewed vision for growth and development in the sport. With Robinson at the helm, there is hope that rugby will continue to flourish globally, reaching new heights and engaging more fans and players alike.

In summary, the election of Dr. Brett Robinson as the chairman of World Rugby marks a momentous occasion for the sport. His commitment to fostering growth and ensuring financial sustainability could lead to a bright future for rugby worldwide.
