Dr. Brett Robinson of Australia has been elected as the new chairman of World Rugby after two rounds of voting held during the interim World Rugby Council meeting in Dublin, Ireland. At 54 years old, Robinson makes history as the first president from the Southern Hemisphere to take on this prominent role. He was selected by the Council, which consists of 52 members, surpassing competitors Abdelatiff Benazzi from France and Andrea Rinaldo from Italy.

The voting process was conducted through a secret ballot, managed by independent scrutineers and observers, adhering to World Rugby’s Constitution. Robinson’s term will last for four years, with the option for re-election in 2028.

In addressing the Council, Robinson expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, stating, “It is an immense privilege and honour to have been elected as World Rugby chairman by my colleagues on Council.” He emphasized the global ambition among members to enhance the strength of the sport further.

Robinson outlined his commitment to several key areas during his term, including ensuring financial sustainability for all member unions amid ongoing economic pressures, effectively executing World Rugby’s global growth strategy, fostering skills to enhance audience engagement and business outcomes, expanding the fan and player base through safety investments and legal reforms, and maintaining a disciplined governing body.

He expressed his intention to unite the rugby community, aiming to generate commercial success in today’s global sports environment and committing to follow through on these initiatives. Robinson also conveyed his respect for his fellow candidates and looked forward to collaborating with the newly elected World Rugby Executive Committee.

Robinson takes over from Sir Bill Beaumont, whose notable eight-year presidency included significant governance reforms, the expansion of both men’s and women’s Rugby World Cups, and adept management during the challenges posed by the global pandemic.

This leadership change presents an opportunity for fresh ideas and innovation in global rugby governance. Robinson’s experience and vision may lead to exciting developments that could enhance the sport’s appeal and sustainability in the years to come.

In summary, as Dr. Robinson embarks on this journey as chairman, the rugby community has reason to feel optimistic about the path forward under his leadership. His commitment to collaboration, growth, and engagement may pave the way for a brighter future for rugby worldwide.
