New Era for Fiji’s Judiciary: Isikeli Mataitoga Takes Office as Court of Appeal President

Justice Isikeli Mataitoga was officially sworn in as the President of the Court of Appeal in Fiji during a ceremony held at the State House in Suva today. The swearing-in was officiated by the President of the Republic of Fiji, His Excellency Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu.

The event was attended by several prominent figures, including Chief Justice His Lordship Salesi Temo, Minister for Justice Siromi Turaga, Assistant Minister for Justice Ratu Josaia Niudamu, Chief Registrar Tomasi Bainivalu, Solicitor General Ropate Green, and Permanent Secretary for Justice Selina Kuruleca, along with Justice Mataitoga’s family.

Justice Mataitoga had been acting as the President of the Court of Appeal since October 3, 2024, prior to his official appointment today. He boasts an extensive background in law and diplomacy, having served as Fiji’s Ambassador to various countries including Australia, Singapore, and Japan, and to international organizations such as the European Union and UNESCO.

He holds degrees in law from Victoria University in Wellington, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) in 1981 and a Master of Laws (LL.M) in 1985. His previous roles include serving as the Solicitor General from 1993 to 1996, the Chief Executive of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2004 to 2007, and the Director of Public Prosecutions from 1989 to 1993.

Furthermore, Justice Mataitoga’s contributions to the legal field extend to academia, as he is currently an Adjunct Professor at the University of Fiji School of Law and the Institute of Strategic and Defense Studies.

His appointment as President is seen as a significant stride toward strengthening Fiji’s judiciary, building upon recent advancements within the legal system. The positive outlook surrounding his leadership promises to further enhance public confidence in the judiciary, ensuring justice is upheld in Fiji.
