New Era for Fijiana Rugby: Head Coach Search Underway!

A new head coach for the Fijiana women’s rugby sevens team will be appointed at the beginning of 2025. Fiji Rugby Union interim Trustees chairman Peter Mazey announced that they plan to fill this position ahead of the 2025 HSBC SVNS Series, following the conclusion of Saiasi Fuli’s contract as head coach in December.

Mazey stated that after thorough discussions with Fuli, it was decided to advertise the coaching role in the media next week. The Fiji Rugby Union is now seeking the best candidate to lead the women’s team into its next stage.

“The new coach will be responsible for initiating and implementing a high-performance strategy to form a competitive team,” Mazey explained. He also noted that most contracts for women’s sevens players have lapsed following the Olympics, except for Younis Bese and Heleina Young, whose contracts continue until the year’s end.

Fuli expressed gratitude to the Fiji Rugby Union for the opportunity to coach the national women’s team. He reflected on the challenges he faced while transitioning from a men’s coaching background, having served as an assistant to Gareth Baber before taking on the head coach role and guiding the team from relegation.

In related news, Osea Kolinisau will remain as the head coach of the Fiji men’s sevens rugby team for the next four years. Mazey confirmed that Kolinisau’s strong performance in recent months has showcased his potential and vision. He has plans for the future that will be shared soon, with the primary objective being to secure a gold medal at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
