Richard Walker has been appointed as the new head coach of the Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s team, according to an announcement from the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU). This decision comes as Walker, who previously served as the head coach for the USA Women’s 7s team, takes over from Saiasi Fuli, whose term concluded in December.

With over 15 years of coaching expertise, Walker brings a significant wealth of international experience, having held coaching positions with USA Rugby Women’s 7s, Japan Women’s 7s, and the Auckland Storm. His impressive record includes leading the Seattle Seawolves to a Major League Rugby Championship and guiding the USA Women’s 7s during the Rio Olympic Games and the 7s World Cup in San Francisco, where the team surpassed expectations. The FRU praised Walker’s reputation for fostering high-performance standards and sustainable success in elite rugby programs, emphasizing the importance of his leadership in shaping the future of the Fijiana 7s squad.

The FRU acknowledged the contributions of interim head coach Timoci Volavola and highlighted the collaborative efforts that will continue as the team prepares for upcoming international competitions, including the HSBC SVNS Series and the pathway to Olympic qualification. This new chapter for the Fijiana 7s team comes during a transitional phase for women’s rugby in Fiji, providing an opportunity to enhance their competitive edge on the global stage.

With Walker at the helm, there is a renewed sense of optimism and expectations within the Fijian rugby community, hopeful for a bright future that leverages both the existing talent and new strategies for success.
