New Era for Fijian Drua: Former Maori All Blacks Coach Takes Charge

Chris Gibbes, the former head coach of the Maori All Blacks, has been named the new Forwards Coach for the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua. Gibbes is recognized for his extensive coaching experience with teams such as the Hurricanes, Wellington, and Waikato, and will be responsible for developing the Drua’s forward pack in the forthcoming Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific seasons.

Most recently, Gibbes served as the Senior Assistant Coach at the Hurricanes from 2019 to 2023, and he famously led the Maori All Blacks to a notable 32-17 win against Ireland in 2018. He previously coached Wellington in New Zealand’s NPC, successfully guiding them back to the premiership division in 2017 and reaching the semifinals in 2018.

Gibbes has also held the position of Head Coach for Waikato in 2008 and was the Forwards Coach for Japan during the 2007 Rugby World Cup. A former tough second-row player, he played 44 matches for Hawkes Bay, Waikato, Thames Valley, and the New Zealand Colts from 1994 to 2002.

Regarding his new role, Gibbes expressed excitement about joining the club and emphasized his commitment to enhancing the strong foundation that has been established. He highlighted the impressive playing roster and motivated coaching team at the Drua, stating that his family connection to Fiji is significant, as his grandmother was from Rotuma and his father was born in Suva.

Fijian Drua CEO Mark Evans praised Gibbes’ impressive track record in New Zealand and other rugby markets, noting that he will be an ideal mentor for the forwards as the team aims to make a significant impact in Super Rugby Pacific. Evans also mentioned that Gibbes’ experience will be invaluable for the young players at the club.

Gibbes succeeds Greg Fleming in the Forwards Coach position, as Fleming transitions to take on the responsibilities of Defence Coach with the club.
