An independent selection panel will be established to evaluate and shortlist candidates for the role of Commissioner of Police. This decision was detailed in a press release following a meeting of the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) in Suva.
The COC’s statement indicated that they would review the panel’s assessment report before making an appointment recommendation to His Excellency the President. A total of 30 applications have been received for the position, including four from women, highlighting a diverse pool of candidates.
Additionally, the COC addressed the nomination for the chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC). According to Section 75 (6) of the Constitution, candidates for this role must either be or qualify to be a judge. The commission is actively reviewing suitable candidates following the resignation of Ms. Barbara Malimali.
Furthermore, the COC has approved recommendations from an independent committee regarding compensation and benefits for individuals serving in constitutional roles.
These developments signal a commitment to transparency and inclusivity in top governmental appointments, particularly in ensuring a diverse representation among candidates. The active involvement of an independent selection panel reinforces the integrity of the process, offering hope for effective leadership in the Commissioner of Police role and the Electoral Commission moving forward.
In summary, the establishment of an independent panel and the careful consideration of candidates for key positions underscore the importance of strong leadership within Fiji’s constitutional framework.
