The National Fire Authority (NFA) has officially launched its Paramedics Ambulance Department at its headquarters in Suva, marking a significant step in enhancing emergency medical response capabilities. During this event, new paramedics were also recognized and badged.
NFA Chief Executive Officer Puamau Sowane explained that the Ambulance Department was previously managed by operational officers, which led to inefficiencies in the use of government funds. He emphasized the department’s mission to train more professionals, improving the management of medical emergencies.
Sowane shared that the establishment of this new department reflects the NFA’s ongoing commitment to enhance operational effectiveness. The department is now led by a dedicated manager paramedic, and efforts are being made to expand facilities, with a new center for paramedics being constructed at the fire station. Current firefighters have already undergone training in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, although specialized paramedics are still being developed.
The newly formed Emergency Ambulance and Paramedic Health Services Department aims to provide crucial support to both victims and firefighters during emergencies. Paramedics will be deployed as first responders to fire incidents, ensuring care is available on-site for both victims and firefighting personnel.
In addition to the nine ambulances currently in operation, the NFA plans to introduce six additional paramedic ambulances to further enhance its services. These vehicles are designed for more than just transportation; they feature pre-hospital care capabilities to better meet the needs of those they serve.
As the festive season approaches, Sowane urged the public to exercise caution to prevent fire accidents, underscoring the NFA’s proactive approach in ensuring community safety.
