The National Fire Authority (NFA) has officially launched its Paramedic Ambulance Department and has recognized new paramedics at their Suva headquarters. NFA Chief Executive Officer Puamau Sowane highlighted that the previous management by operational officers lacked effective oversight, leading to underutilization of government funds.

The primary objective of the newly established department is to enhance training for professionals, enabling them to manage medical emergencies more efficiently. Sowane indicated that the NFA’s strategy includes appointing a dedicated manager for the paramedic department and constructing a new center within the fire station specifically designated for paramedic services. While the department is in the process of building a specialized team, some of the firefighters have already received training in collaboration with the Ministry of Health.

The new Emergency Ambulance and Paramedic Health Services Department aims to provide comprehensive care to both victims and firefighters at incident sites. As first responders in fire-related situations, paramedics will be on standby to assist those affected. Currently, the NFA operates nine ambulances and plans to introduce an additional six paramedic ambulances to enhance their service capacities. The new ambulances are equipped not just for transportation but also designed for pre-hospital care.

As the festive season approaches, Sowane encourages the public to exercise caution to prevent fire-related incidents.

This initiative marks a significant step towards improving emergency medical services in the region, emphasizing the importance of well-trained personnel in enhancing community safety. With the addition of more ambulances and specialized training, the NFA is poised to provide better support during emergencies, which is a hopeful development for public health and safety.
