Richard Walker has been named the new head coach of the Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s team, according to the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU). This announcement follows the end of Saiasi Fuli’s contract in December. Walker, originally from New Zealand, brings with him over 15 years of coaching experience, including roles with Japan Women’s Rugby Sevens and the Auckland Storm.

Known for his commitment to high-performance rugby, Walker previously led the Seattle Seawolves to a Major League Rugby Championship. His coaching credentials were further solidified through his time with the USA Women’s 7s team, where he participated in the Rio 2016 Olympics and the World Cup held in San Francisco, where the team exceeded its goals.

The FRU has expressed confidence in Walker’s capabilities, highlighting his vision and extensive experience as crucial as the team prepares for important upcoming events, such as the HSBC SVNS Series and the campaign for Olympic qualification. They also acknowledged the contributions made by interim head coach Timoci Volavola, indicating a supportive team environment moving forward.

Walker’s appointment is viewed as a strategic move to boost the Fijiana 7s team’s global competitiveness. There is a strong sense of optimism within the Fijian rugby community that his coaching philosophy and experience will foster a successful future, significantly advancing women’s rugby in Fiji.

The transition to Walker’s leadership is seen not merely as a change but as a valuable opportunity to harness existing talent while introducing new strategies for growth, creating an encouraging environment as the Fijiana 7s team strives for excellence on the world stage.
