New Equipment Boosts PWD’s Road Recovery Efforts

The Public Works Department (PWD) is preparing to resume its operations following its reinstatement by the government last year. After being inactive for several months due to the previous administration’s closure, the PWD has recently received a significant boost with the arrival of three trucks, two excavators, and two bulldozers in Suva on Wednesday.

The delivery of this heavy machinery was officially handed over at the Vision Motors Showroom in Vatuwaqa to representatives from the Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport.

Paula Baleilevuka, the permanent secretary of the Ministry, remarked that the arrival of these new machines is timely and will contribute to infrastructure development and capacity building. He highlighted that these machines represent a new addition to the ministry’s fleet.

“These vehicles will enhance road standards and conditions, facilitating better access for economic activities,” said Mr. Baleilevuka. He also noted that they will increase the ministry’s ability to carry out road construction and maintenance in rural and remote areas.

The new equipment includes two large excavators, two D6 bulldozers, two dumper trucks, and one flat-top truck, collectively valued at approximately $1,627,104. For the current financial year, the ministry has been allocated $5 million aimed at improving and upgrading rural roads. Mr. Baleilevuka confirmed that the new machinery will be utilized in upcoming projects.
