Attorney-General Graham Leung has confirmed the appointment of John Rabuku as the new Deputy Director of Public Prosecution (DPP). This announcement comes just five weeks after Rabuku stepped down from his role as acting DPP. The acting DPP Nancy Tikoisuva made the official announcement on Wednesday.

Leung previously requested that Rabuku resign from the acting DPP position after the Supreme Court deemed him “ineligible” for the role. He emphasized that the DPP has the constitutional authority to appoint staff independently. “By law, that decision is solely made by the DPP or the acting DPP, not by the Judicial Services Commission or the Attorney-General,” Leung stated.

He further explained that the automatic assumption of responsibilities by the deputy when the acting DPP is on leave is not guaranteed.
