In a historic event held in Fiji, Roko Tevita Uluilakeba Mara has been ceremonially appointed as the new Tui Nayau, a title of significant cultural and spiritual importance for the Lau Group. The instatement took place at dawn on Nayau Island, where Roko Ului was honored through a fusion of ancient ceremonies and religious rituals led by Archbishop Peter Loy Chong. Reverend Dr. Semisi Turagavou, President of the Methodist Church in Fiji, also participated, crowning him with a traditional masi while presenting him with a Bible to symbolize his divine appointment.
This moment marks the revival of the Tui Nayau title, which has been vacant since the passing of Roko Ului’s father, Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, in 2004. Roko Ului returned from Tonga, where he served the Royal Family, to assume this prominent role as he prepares to lead the Lau Province. His lineage through the Mara family ties him deeply to the royal houses of Tonga and Samoa.
Surrounded by dignitaries and significant figures, including King Tupou VI of Tonga and the Maori queen, Roko Ului’s installation was not just a ceremonial formality but a reinvigoration of the heritage and identity for the Lauan people. The event drew comparisons to historical installations, such as that of his father in 1969, underscoring the continuity of cultural practices and community unity amidst changing times.
As the Lau community celebrates this pivotal transition, there exists a collective anticipation for Roko Ului’s leadership to reinforce cultural pride and familial bonds. The installation serves as a reminder of the strength found in tradition, instilling hope for a prosperous future under his guidance. With preparations reflecting the community’s commitment to their cultural roots, the event highlighted the power of unity in navigating contemporary challenges, promising a vibrant and resilient future for the Lau Province.
The sentiments expressed during this ceremony echo the ongoing dialogue surrounding cultural preservation within Fijian society, signifying a renewed spirit within the community as they embrace the future.
