Construction on the new Cakaudrove Provincial Council building in Yaroi, Savusavu, is set to be completed by September 19, following nearly three years of significant delays. RFMF Northern Division Officer Commanding Viliame Tagivetaua confirmed that additional building materials are expected to arrive soon, which will help expedite the remaining work.
Currently, a team of 34 personnel from the RFMF 2nd Combat Engineers is focused on completing the project, which has faced challenges due to the high volume of construction activity across Fiji. Although the provincial meeting intended to be hosted in the new office has been postponed, Tagivetaua assures the community that the building will be ready before the end of the year.
The new council building is notably larger than its predecessor, which was destroyed by fire in 2017. Since that incident, staff members have temporarily operated from a nearby staff quarter. Amidst construction delays, Soqosoqo Vakamarama iTaukei President Adi Salaseini Kavu has encouraged traditional leaders and district representatives to continue preparations for the building’s upcoming opening, emphasizing the importance of proactive planning.
Kavu stated, “Even though the work is being delayed, I believe we as the province should continue to prepare for its opening. Let’s not wait for the last minute. This is our property, and each district should continue to prepare something—it should be done well for the sake of the province.”
Once finished, the new council building is anticipated to serve as a crucial hub for governance and community development across Cakaudrove province. This initiative not only signifies a much-needed infrastructure improvement but also reflects a broader commitment to enhancing local governance and resources for community empowerment. The optimistic outlook on this development suggests that it could pave the way for greater community engagement and advancement in the region.
