New Recruits at FCS Receive Vital Lessons for Future Success

New Corrections Recruits Inspire Change in Fiji’s Justice System

Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, the Commissioner of the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS), recently held an informal *talanoa* session with new recruits at the FCS Training Academy in Naboro, marking a critical phase just two weeks before their graduation. The trainees have successfully completed a stringent 14-week Basic Recruit Training program, showcasing their resilience and commitment to their future roles as Corrections Officers.

During the session, Dr. Nakarawa motivated the recruits by sharing insights from his own career, emphasizing the importance of maintaining professional boundaries when working with inmates. He underscored the phrase “familiarity breeds contempt,” cautioning recruits about the potential risks of lax interactions and the vital need for integrity in their new positions. “You have everything to lose,” he warned, stressing how essential personal integrity is as they step into their duties.

The Commissioner also discussed the necessity of continuous education to increase competence and confidence among officers, noting that strong communication skills are critical for success in the corrections environment. Adding to the significance of the event, Dr. Nakarawa announced that four individuals from His Majesty’s Prison in Tonga would be the inaugural graduates of the FCS, receiving an accredited Certificate Level 5 in Corrections Management from Fiji National University.

Reaffirming the FCS’s dedication to integrity, professionalism, and service, Dr. Nakarawa highlighted ongoing efforts to enhance safety and rehabilitation for all inmates. This proactive approach not only prepares skilled officers but also indicates a broader commitment to improving rehabilitation practices within the community. Such initiatives promise a brighter future for corrections in Fiji, underscoring the importance of training and professional integrity, ultimately benefiting both officers and the communities they serve.
