The iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) has announced the rollout of a new Conservation Policy aimed at promoting sustainable management and protection of Fiji’s natural environment. This policy is part of a larger commitment by TLTB to enhance biodiversity preservation and ecosystem health while supporting the rights and interests of landowners.

TLTB’s CEO, Solomoni Nata, explained that the Conservation Policy provides a comprehensive framework designed to tackle environmental degradation on iTaukei lands. He emphasized that it sets forth clear guidelines for managing conservation leases, encouraging sustainable land use practices, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

A significant aspect of the policy is its alignment with global sustainability goals, facilitating collaboration between TLTB, landowners, and national and international agencies. This collaborative effort was informed by extensive consultations involving various stakeholders, ensuring the policy is well-rounded and inclusive.

In addition to the Conservation Policy, TLTB has enhanced special conditions on Fiji Pine leases. Specifically, a seven percent stumpage fee will now apply to fuelwood harvested from these leases, establishing clearer financial arrangements to prevent disputes. This enhancement is expected to serve both environmental and economic needs, benefiting landowners and fostering long-term sustainability.

The Fiji Pine initiative, introduced by the Government of Fiji, supports efforts to rehabilitate dry grasslands, contributing to environmental sustainability while providing economic benefits to landowners. In tandem with lease payments, community development funds will support local education, infrastructure, and rural electrification, further aiding community empowerment.
