A long-awaited community hall project has officially commenced in Vuci, Tailevu, aimed at providing a space for residents, especially during adverse weather conditions. Joji Butadroka, the community development leader in Vuci, highlighted the significance of this initiative, noting that it has been in the planning stages since the leadership of former Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, and will be formally inaugurated at a regional meeting this week.
This project has seen support from the government over the years, initially starting with assistance in 2009 and again in 2012. Under the village improvement scheme, the government has contributed to seeing this community hall come to fruition, with the total cost amounting to $790,000.
Butadroka explained that the new hall will serve as a refuge for locals during storms, as many live near small creeks that can easily flood. He emphasized that the hall will be accessible to all community members, enhancing safety and providing necessary shelter.
Vuci village comprises 67 households, totaling nearly 300 residents. Butadroka explained that during heavy rain or storms, villagers previously sought refuge in places like the pastor’s house or church, but with the establishment of the community hall, they will have a dedicated space for safety.
Additionally, the community hall will house essential facilities including a dispensary, a youth resource center, and a women’s resource center, ensuring comprehensive support for the community. The local council has acknowledged the importance of the hall, expressing hopes that it will significantly benefit residents and serve various educational and community activities.
