The process of selecting a new Commissioner of Police is currently underway. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who chairs the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC), has announced that a selection committee has been formed to review the 29 applications received for the position.

The COC is scheduled to convene again on December 16 to assess the shortlisted candidates. Rabuka noted that the committee has been established and emphasized the importance of this process in ensuring a thorough evaluation.

According to the Fijian Constitution, the President appoints the Commissioner of Police based on recommendations from the COC, after consulting with the minister responsible for the Fiji Police Force.

Among the notable candidates expressing interest in the role are former Assistant Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu, acting Commissioner Juki Fong Chew, and UN Assistant Secretary General Unaisi Vuniwaqa. Furthermore, Major General Jone Kalouniwai, Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, has urged for a swift appointment to ensure stability and morale within the police force.

This selection process is critical as it seeks to establish effective leadership within the Fiji Police Force, which is essential for maintaining public safety and order. As the country looks toward the future, the appointment of a new Commissioner can bring about renewed confidence and direction within the law enforcement community.

In summary, the selection of a new Commissioner of Police is being carefully handled, with a solid focus on the qualifications of candidates and the need for consistent leadership within the Fiji Police Force, fostering hope for an effective transition and enhanced public safety.
