Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka announced that the Constitutional Offices Commission will begin the process of selecting a new Commissioner of Police once the recommendations are submitted to him and the Secretariat. As Chairperson of the Commission, Rabuka confirmed that a date has been set for the Commission to review the applications.
Rabuka expressed the intention for the Commission to convene soon to evaluate the numerous applications received for the COMPOL position. Minister for Home Affairs Pio Tikoduadua mentioned that he will be consulted by the Commission regarding the new appointment, though this discussion has yet to take place.
Following the closure of applications last month, over twenty candidates have submitted their credentials for the role. In the interim, Assistant Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew continues to serve in an acting capacity.
This development marks a significant step in ensuring the leadership of the police force is filled in a timely manner, reflecting a responsive and organized approach to governance. The thorough review process indicates a commitment to transparency and selecting a qualified leader for the police department, which is essential for maintaining public safety and trust.
