Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced that the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) will review candidates for the new Commissioner of Police as soon as the recommendations are provided to him and the Secretariat. Rabuka, who also serves as the Chairperson of the COC, confirmed that a meeting has been scheduled to address this important matter.
He indicated that the commission plans to convene in the near future to examine the numerous applications received for the Commissioner of Police position. Minister for Home Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, emphasized that the COC will consult with him on the selection of the new Commissioner, although this consultation has yet to take place.
Last month marked the closing of applications for the role, which saw an impressive response with over 20 candidates submitting their credentials. Until a new Commissioner is appointed, Assistant Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew will continue to serve in an acting capacity.
This development paves the way for a potentially transformative change in the leadership of the police force, reflecting a commitment to ensuring that the right individual is chosen to uphold the law and maintain public safety. The hopeful anticipation surrounding this appointment holds promise for enhancing the effectiveness of law enforcement in the region.
