The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) is poised to announce the new head coaches for both the Fijiana 7s and 15s teams this week, as confirmed by FRU’s CEO Rovereto Nayacalevu. Offers have already been extended to several candidates, and the FRU is now awaiting their responses.
Among those who have shown interest is Waisale Serevi, a celebrated rugby sevens legend from the US, who has previously coached the Indian Women’s 7s team. Former player Sireli Bobo is also a contender for the coaching roles, although Nayacalevu has not disclosed the identities of all applicants. Serevi is scheduled to collaborate with Bobo and the Fiji Sports Council coaching team to assist in the preparations of the Under-20 7s squad.
Recently, Serevi was appointed the International Brand Ambassador for Aqua Pacific Natural Artesian Water, highlighting his ongoing commitment to the sport and the community.
The Fijiana 15s head coaching position became available following the departure of Mosese Rauluni last October, who significantly impacted the team by leading them to victory in the Oceania Championship and securing qualification for the upcoming Rugby World Cup. The new coach will face the task of continuing this legacy, which includes notable milestones such as the team’s first-ever win against Japan.
As for the Fijiana 7s team, the head coach position has remained vacant since Saiasi Fuli’s contract concluded in December 2023. Fuli’s five-year tenure was marked by guiding the team to a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Nayacalevu emphasized the FRU’s dedication to ensuring that the best candidates are chosen to enhance the teams’ performances and achieve positive results on the international stage. This pivotal moment underscores the ongoing commitment to develop women’s rugby in Fiji while building on past successes and fostering the next generation of talent.
Overall, the announcements are anticipated with optimism, signaling a hopeful future for Fijian rugby as they aim to strengthen their standing in women’s rugby globally. The integration of experienced figures like Serevi into coaching roles is expected to bring fresh perspectives and inspire both current players and future stars of the sport.
