The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) is poised to announce the new head coaches for the Fijiana 7s and 15s teams this week, as confirmed by CEO Rovereto Nayacalevu. Offers have already been sent to interested candidates, and the FRU is currently awaiting their responses.

Among the prominent applicants is Waisale Serevi, a celebrated rugby sevens legend known for coaching the Indian Women’s 7s team. He is expected to play a pivotal role as he collaborates with former player Sireli Bobo and the Fiji Sports Council coaching staff to prepare the Under-20 7s squad. Recently, Serevi was also appointed as the International Brand Ambassador for Aqua Pacific Natural Artesian Water, reinforcing his commitment to the sport.

The Fijiana 15s position became vacant after Mosese Rauluni’s departure last October. Rauluni’s contributions were significant, as he led the team to victory in the Oceania Championship and secured their qualification for the upcoming Rugby World Cup, marking a substantial legacy for his successor.

The Fijiana 7s head coach role has been unfilled since Saiasi Fuli’s contract ended in December. During his five-year tenure, Fuli helped the team clinch a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, further raising the standards for future coaching.

Nayacalevu emphasized the FRU’s goal to appoint the best candidates who can significantly enhance the teams’ performances on the international stage. This coaching transition is viewed as an opportunity to build upon the solid foundation established by previous coaches and to continue developing young Fijian talent in rugby.

Overall, the announcements are generating excitement and optimism within the rugby community, signifying a promising future for women’s rugby in Fiji. The FRU’s proactive approach highlights their commitment to fostering talent and achieving success in international competitions, creating a hopeful atmosphere for all stakeholders involved.
