The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) is set to announce the new head coaches for both the Fijiana 7s and Fijiana 15s teams later this week, as confirmed by FRU CEO Rovereto Nayacalevu. The offers have been sent to prospective candidates, and the FRU is currently awaiting their responses. Among the notable applicants is the legendary Waisale Serevi, a renowned figure in sevens rugby who has previously coached the Indian Women’s 7s team. Former player Sireli Bobo is also in the running, while Nayacalevu has chosen not to disclose other candidates.
Serevi is expected to collaborate with Bobo and the Fiji Sports Council (FSC) coaching staff in preparation for the Under-20 7s squad. This collaborative effort highlights a proactive approach to developing young talents in Fijian rugby. Additionally, Serevi was recently appointed as the International Brand Ambassador for Aqua Pacific Natural Artesian Water, which further emphasizes his significant role in the sporting community.
The need for new coaches arises following the departure of Mosese Rauluni from the Fijiana 15s position last October. Rauluni had a notable impact, leading the Fijiana XV team to victory in the Oceania Championship, securing qualification for the upcoming Rugby World Cup, and achieving a historic win against Japan. His successor will face the challenge of filling substantial shoes in terms of leadership and performance.
In the case of the Fijiana 7s team, the head coach position became vacant when Saiasi Fuli’s contract was not renewed in December after a successful five-year tenure. Under Fuli’s guidance, the team secured a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and advanced to the Paris Olympics, although they did not progress past the pool stages.
These imminent coaching announcements are pivotal for the future of women’s rugby in Fiji. Nayacalevu has emphasized that the goal is to select the most effective coaches to enhance performance and results, driving the teams to greater heights in international competitions.
As the FRU moves forward with this transition, there is growing optimism for the future of Fijian rugby, highlighted by a commitment to developing talent and achieving success on the global stage. The forthcoming announcements are highly anticipated by players and fans alike, marking a significant moment in Fijian rugby history.
