A new head coach for the Fijiana women’s rugby sevens team will be appointed at the beginning of 2025. This announcement follows the decision by Fiji Rugby Union interim Trustees chairman Peter Mazey, who stated that the women’s team requires a new leader for the upcoming 2025 HSBC SVNS Series as Saiasi Fuli’s contract will conclude in December.
Mazey mentioned, “After extensive discussions with Saiasi Fuli, we have decided to open the head coach position for advertisement.” The advertisement for the role is expected to appear in media outlets next week.
The Fiji Rugby Union is currently on the lookout for a suitable candidate to steer the women’s team into its next chapter. “The new coach will be entrusted with developing and executing a high-performance strategy to form a new team,” he added.
Additionally, Mazey noted that all contracts for the women’s sevens players have expired following the Olympics, with the exception of Younis Bese and Heleina Young, who are under contract until the end of the year.
Fuli expressed gratitude to the FRU for the opportunity to coach the national women’s sevens team, remarking, “It was a challenging role coming from a men’s coaching background. I assisted Gareth Baber before stepping in to lead this team from relegation, and it has been a demanding yet rewarding journey over the past five years.”
In related news, Osea Kolinisau will continue as the head coach of the Fiji men’s sevens rugby team for the next four years, as confirmed by Mazey. “Osea’s impressive results over the last four months have showcased his potential and future vision,” he stated. Kolinisau has ambitious plans ahead, and his primary goal is to secure a gold medal at the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028.
