New Classrooms Ignite Educational Opportunities in Fiji

Japan’s Ambassador to Fiji, Michii Rokuichiro, urged students at Dreketi Central College in Macuata on Friday to embrace the opportunities for knowledge and academic growth. The ambassador was joined by Coalition Government assistant ministers and Minister for Finance, Biman Prasad, during the handover ceremony for three newly built classrooms funded by the Japanese Government.

The classrooms were financed through the Japanese Government Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) programme, with a total investment of $333,784. Mr. Rokuichiro stated that the new facilities symbolize a gateway to educational advancement. In addition to the classrooms, the college also received three tables and chairs for teachers, along with 120 new desks and chairs for students.

The ambassador encouraged students to take responsibility for the resources provided and use them effectively. “We have a strong bilateral relationship with Fiji, and we consistently aim to support the education sector,” he remarked.

Minister Prasad expressed pride in witnessing the development of quality infrastructure at his former school, emphasizing how the new classrooms would benefit every student at the college.

School manager Savenaca Vakacego highlighted his dedication to ensuring that the school developed new cyclone-resistant classrooms. He noted that the funding from the Japanese government came at a crucial time. “Your assistance will never be forgotten by our community, students, teachers, and parents,” Mr. Vakacego stated.

He also reflected on the patience required throughout the process from the initial project proposal to securing Japanese government support. The school currently accommodates 364 students from Years 9 to 13 and operates a technical college as well.
