The Ministry for Women, Children and Social Protection is planning to implement the Child Protection Bill as part of the 2025–2026 National Budget. Minister Sashi Kiran emphasized that this initiative will prioritize the protection of children and the fight against gender-based violence.

Kiran highlighted the ministry’s commitment to inter-ministerial cooperation in reviewing existing child care and protection laws to better safeguard children. Alongside child protection, the ministry is also focused on the welfare of elderly individuals and persons with disabilities. Recent surveys have revealed a concerning number of elderly individuals living on the streets, especially in the Western Division, with a significant portion being of Indian descent. The ministry aims to provide these seniors with safe accommodation in the upcoming budget allocation.

Additionally, the ministry is working on reviewing the Disabilities Act to improve the quality of life for individuals with disabilities.

This approach aligns with the government’s broader strategy to support the vulnerable segments of the population, a commitment previously asserted by Minister Lynda Tabuya during discussions of the 2024-2025 National Budget. The government’s ongoing efforts also include establishing a Child Well-being Centre to assist at-risk children, which will provide rehabilitation and reintegration support, and enhancing transport assistance for senior citizens and those with disabilities.

By taking a comprehensive view that includes legislation aimed at improving conditions for both children and the elderly, the ministry is demonstrating a determined and hopeful effort toward fostering a safer and more inclusive community in Fiji. The focus on both preventive measures and support systems bodes well for those in need, ensuring that the country is moving toward a more compassionate future.
