The search for a new head coach of the Manu Samoa rugby team is nearing completion, as Tuilaepa Sa’ilele Malielegaoi, chairman of Lakapi Samoa, announced that interviews have concluded. The process, which garnered numerous applications from various strong candidates, included contenders from outside Samoa, particularly from Britain, New Zealand, and Australia.
“There are some really good candidates, and it’s going to be a tough decision for the panel,” Tuilaepa stated in response to inquiries from the Samoa Observer. The board awaits the final panel’s report, which will play a crucial role in selecting the most suitable person for the head coach position.
The vacancy arose when Mase Mahonri Schwalger resigned in January 2025 following serious legal challenges, including charges of multiple sexual offenses. Despite these troubling events, Mase had led the team to several victories in 2024, including a significant win against Italy and strong performances in the Pacific Nations Cup. Lakapi Samoa recognized his contributions and noted his role in developing the team.
As the position remains unfilled, 2025 emerges as a pivotal year for Manu Samoa. The upcoming Pacific Nations Cup will be essential for the team’s campaigning, as it serves as a key qualifier for the expanded Rugby World Cup in 2027.
This search reflects an ongoing commitment in Pacific rugby to find leadership that can drive teams to success even amid challenges. The outcome of this coaching pursuit holds promise for the future of Manu Samoa rugby, creating hope for a strong showing in the tournaments ahead.
